This happens because washing a piece frequently will strip the clusters of the natural oils found in them, causing hereafter breakage with long-term use.
However, washing should be done with a very diplomatic and extra cleaning agent for down material. It is preferable that a pro or dry cleaner that knows how to cope the material cleans the bedding pieces. Washing them in a home engine is not recommended, but can be done. Agitator machines will damage the down material; market front loaders must be used since they are gentler. One word of caution is to make sure that there are no holes in the fabric and that it is strong sufficient to be able to cope a washing cycle. If the material is worn, it is not recommended to use a washer because it will break and damage the washer. The same goes for dryers. If the pillows or comforters are made of silk, pro dry cleaning must be done.
Air drying is recommended because a dryer's heat may damage the material. However, each one may take up to three or four hours to completely dry. Not letting the pieces dry properly will cause mildew. Because this is a natural material, it will smell separate when wet, but once it is dry it will smell fresh again.
These bedding elements should be stored in a dry environment, away from moisture. A breathable bag just like the one the bedding came in when purchased is all it takes. Dry cleaners' plastic bags are not recommended, as the material needs to breathe to verbalize freshness.

First I'll give a somewhat dry account of what I did after I left Etosha. Then I'll get a little less dry on why I'm a day late. So last Sat evening I left Etosha for the CCF where I would stay my last night in Namibia. In Etosha I slept in the rooftop tent (bed 1). Now stay with me, as where I slept is rather important I think. When I got back to the CCF, I packed. Yuk, I hate to pack. I shared some stories and pictures with the interns, then finally went to sleep around 1AM in a Matti's room (bed 2). Matti is a Nambian and research assistant at the CCF. He is without a doubt the nicest, coolest, and most fun person I had the pleasure of working with. When out in the field we would sing songs from the Lion King CD. While out checking the trail cameras we would sing "Hanukah Mata -- its such a problem-free philosophy" just over and over. Somehow just singing it made us feel so happy and smiley all day and even now I can't stop singing it in my mind. I woke up early the next day, around 5:30AM ...
