Entry from: Pretoria, South Africa Entry Title: "The Long Journey Home" Entry: "OK, I think I'll start this last thrilling blog entry! Right now I'm 30 000 feet in the air and several hundred miles off the coast of Angola. Hmm, I've never been to Angola, but I'd love to go. OK, I digress, so back on task....... First I'll give a somewhat dry account of what I did after I left Etosha. Then I'll get a little less dry on why I'm a day late. So last Sat evening I left Etosha for the CCF where I would stay my last night in Namibia. In Etosha I slept in the rooftop tent (bed 1). Now stay with me, as where I slept is rather important I think. When I got back to the CCF, I packed. Yuk, I hate to pack. I shared some stories and pictures with the interns, then finally went to sleep around 1AM in a Matti's room (bed 2). Matti is a Nambian and research assistant at the CCF. He is without a doubt the nicest, coolest, and most fun person I had the pleasure of working with. When out in the field we would sing songs from the Lion King CD. While out checking the trail cameras we would sing "Hanukah Mata -- its such a problem-free philosophy" just over and over. Somehow just singing it made us feel so happy and smiley all day and even now I can't stop singing it in my mind. I woke up early the next day, around 5:30AM ...

Entry from: Sarlat, France Entry Title: "The good life" Entry: "Cool and dark ... big comfy bed ... cozy comforter ... I didn't want to wake up and leave my castle this morning, but I had to get up at 8:45. Breakfast, and then off to rent a kayak for a float down the Dordogne river! Pierre-Henri actually was about to knock on my door as I walked out, at 8:46 - he was worried I wouldn't have time to eat my breakfast before leaving! The canoe rental place actually will pick you up with advance notice, which Pierre-Henri graciously arranged for me last night. I ended up missing my ride, because as I sat out in the garden eating breakfast, I thought they would knock on the gate. I even poked out my head once or twice, but didn't see anyone. It turned out that I was supposed to wait outside for my ride - oops! Luckily, Pierre-Henri was on his way to another town, so once again, he was gracious enough to drop me off at the rental place. We had a bit of a chat, and it turns out that he lived in Paris for many, many years, but decided that small-town Sarlat was more his lifestyle. The canoe rental cost 17 euros, and it turned out to be money very well spent. The beauty of the Dordogne is that it's very easy to stop anywhere you like for a photo, a break, or a splash in the river. After a few hours, I was WAY ...

A TripAdvisor™ TripWow slideshow of a travel blog to Darjeeling, India by TravelPod blogger Moniminotaur titled "Wait, where the hell am I?!?" Moniminotaur's travel blog entry: "rolling hills, amazing views of snow-capped mountains, drop-dead gorgeous sunrises with chanting accompaniment, and equally magical sunsets...darjeeling is the stuff snow globes are made of. in fact, one might confuse it for aspen, except that there's no hot water, no heat, power outtages every 19 seconds, and flushing the toilet involves a bucket and some manual labor...true, there are snarling gangs of street dogs at every bend and random slabs of meat and plucked chickens hanging everywhere, but where is the india of my dreams?!? where are the dead monkey carcasses lying in piles of garbage, where are the people bathing in filth water coming out of the pump in the sidewalk as they wash dishes, where are the cess pools of raw sewage?!? oddly enough, and news to me, the temp in darjeeling barely hovers above 30ish degrees (F), which would be fine if i had a snow suit, but i don't. yesterday i woke up and after much debate decided to risk the hypothermia and brave the glacier-cold water to not only shower but wash my hair. this involves my having to stand under the icey cold running water for some time while standing on a slab of stone, toiling away at my almost-dread-like curls with my brush. the water was so cold that my hands actually started to cramp up and i considered just brushing the ...

"Shangri La" Jkirby's photos around Zhongdian, China

"Shangri La" Jkirby's photos around Zhongdian, China Video Clips. Duration : 2.63 Mins.

A TripAdvisor™ TripWow slideshow of a travel blog to Zhongdian, China by TravelPod blogger Jkirby titled "Shangri La" Jkirby's travel blog entry: "China. Take the United States, eliminate the Democratic Party, quadruple the number of people, and run all government agencies through the Department of Motor Vehicles. Now, like a Sim City game, put China on pause and let the new US model go for 20 years. I think the two would be remarkably similar. Or, conversely, take China, somehow reduce the population by 50%, and let Hong Kong run the place. Let this Sim City model run for 20 years and, again, I think the outcome would be remarkably to the US Maybe I'm crazy. Zhongdian. Take Santa Maria apart, ship it to Colorado, and rebuild it on the outskirts of Telluride. Zhongdian has an incredibly beautiful setting: Tibetan peaks to the west, western Sichuan peaks to the north, lakes snuggled amongst smaller mountains just outside of town, ancient, authentic Tibetan Buddhist monasteries at each end of town, sitting at 3400 meters (11000 feet). The old town luckily lacks the Disneyland perfection like Lijiang and lacks the massive crowds of tourists and retains the intricately carved wood building facades and friendly shopkeepers. The only real down side is the massive generic Chinese urban sprawl outside the city. Overall I find it my favorite city I have visited so far. Yesterday with my Croatian friend I explored the peaceful monastery north of town called Ganden Sumtseling Gompa ...
